[ the name ]

A father, a son, and the hat on the sign.

A nón lá is the palm-leaf conical hat worn all over Vietnam — in rice fields, on street corners, over soup carts. It's on our sign, and it's the shape of the lamps over the tables. Look up when you visit.

Ronny Nguyen opened this room with his son Tommy on December 9, 2020. Ronny also runs Sao Mai over on First Avenue — Nón Lá is the smaller, closer-to-home kitchen: the dishes their family actually eats, cooked the way they're cooked at home.

The broth leans light, but it's still packed with plenty of flavor.
— The Infatuation

Small room. A few tables. Food that doesn't need explaining.
